2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Response
The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated staff about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the need for a clearer vision.
Ismailer noted that the team is now overhauling the project with a revised vision, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
A Pattern of Key Recruitment
This announcement echoes a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Here is the entire text from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”
With your dedication and versatility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s the game testing phase was revealing. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the necessity for a more distinct vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the criticism to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its potential to our audience.
The trust in this project grows every day. To further the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. After a period of discussions, Ben starts with us on the specified date.
His management and expertise in the competitive gaming field is vast, having dedicated the past decade and a half creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving Ben next week. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the progress of the game in the weeks to follow.
David

Game Information and Vision
Project Ethos was announced in last year together with a public demo. At the time, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an thrilling evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Face the rivals with fresh skills, stakes, and challenges that shift every session. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The option is up to you."
Project Ethos does not have an announced release date or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect further news as development continues.
