Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
