European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
